  1. “Transforming the Conversation: Finding Common Ground on Marriage Equality”

The head of a group working to achieve marriage equality in Indiana by fostering respectful conversations among Hoosiers will speak at the YWCA Northeast Indiana on May 22 at noon.

Jean Capler, president of Fair Talk, a Bloomington-based grassroots group, will speak as part of the YWCA’s Diversity Dialogue series. A legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized.”

Jean will discuss some of the rights denied to same gender couples, then open it up for discussion.

The Dialogue will take place on Wednesday, May 22, from noon to 1:30 pm at YWCA Northeast Indiana’s 1610 Spy Run Avenue office. This and all Diversity Dialogues are free and open to the public. He went on to create the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation, which works to find a cure for paralysis.
The first 25 attendees at Thursday’s event will receive a free copy of “My Finish Line”, a film that tells Schmidt’s story through Murray’s music.

  15. Stand Against Racism is a YWCA sponsored movement that aims to eliminate racism by raising awareness through its annual event. This annual event takes place the last Friday of each April (Friday, April 26, 2013) and addresses the root causes of racism and encourages conversations across diverse communities in the USA.

This year, YWCA Northeast Indiana will be hosting a public stand at our 1610 Spy Run Avenue office in Fort Wayne on Friday, April 26. The public is invited to join us beginning at 11:00 am as we create posters encouraging others to “Stand Against Racism”. We will then go out on the sidewalks along Spy Run Avenue from noon to 1:00 pm and encourage passing drivers to honk and take a stand themselves.

For the benefit of other organizations in our area, YWCA Northeast Indiana is the coordinating agency and we’re looking for schools, churches, and businesses to join in our stand against racism by becoming a participating site for 2013. This could take the form of changing the marquee in front of your building or hosting a public discussion or movie screening! All participating sites will receive free materials to help make their stand possible – any degree of involvement makes an impact!

Learn how to become a participating site by visiting http://www.standagainstracism.org/become_participating_site.

We are trying to raise money for the Keller Family TEAM JOEY is Huge and is now Nationwide it has moved very quickly. We already set this up just a few weeks ago and this was before we realized how big +Team Joey+ was going to be. Angie Boyer is our Team Captain. You may contact her for donations angella.boyer@yahoo.com

We would appreciatte anything you can do to share this story and or get the word out. JOEY is currently in the fight of his life.

    +Team Joey+

For Joey’s story > http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/joeykeller If you click on this site it will give you more indepth info with pictures. To sum it up ****Nick Keller is from Dekalb County and has been fighting for his precious son who they have just been told by the doctors they have exhausted every medical option, per Nick “cancer is moving quickly, We have to to pray, we need a miracle.” Team Joey Nation is a group of people who rallied together for this family. The things this child has went through are unimaginable..from being unresponsive, to coming back, to the doctors telling his parents it is the end you need to make arrangements. Then miraculously he awakens and returns goes home for two weeks and then is when the big blows started coming. He started dumping sodium and haveing unthinkable seizures it has been a parents worst nightmare. Medically there was no explanation for JOEY awakening with little to no damage. These seizures were furocious and would not stop for weeks. Joey is 9yrs old now and we would like to spread the word and ask for every positive thought or prayer to be sent this child’s way. More info below or please go to the caringbridge site

    http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/joeykeller

**On November 22, 2010, 7 year old Joey Keller was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, a highly malignant primary brain tumor that originates in the cerebellum. Joey is still fighting today, and doing so with the spirit and attitude that amazes and inspires family, friends, and even caregivers. Those who have been affected in one way or another by Joey have banded together and morphed into “Team Joey”. Now, the Heroes Foundation is taking things a step further and formalizing Team Joey into a program to further the battle against pediatric cancer.

The Team Joey Program will consist of two components:

There will be a Team Joey position within the Heroes Foundation’s SJP Heroes Cancer Research Fund. From there, those Team Joey directed funds will be allocated to pediatric cancer research projects within the Indiana University School of Medicine.

The other component to Team Joey would bring one of Joey’s favorite past-times, LEGO®, to pediatric cancer patients. Perhaps Joey’s spirit and attitude have been somewhat shaped by his affinity for LEGO, after all, LEGO brand values are Imagination, Creativity, Fun, Learning, Caring, and Quality. Allowing pediatric cancer patients the opportunity to be kids and let their natural imagination, playfulness and curiosity to come out and possibly distract them, even for just a while, from the reality of their situation. We certainly align with the value of Caring, as LEGO describes, “Caring is about the desire to make a positive difference in the lives of children, for our partners, colleagues and the world we find ourselves in, and considering their perspective in everything we do.” Enough said…See More

Visiting Angels is proud to be a partner in this important first step in finding out if someone has a memory problem, and in helping patients and families become aware of the resources and assistance that is available.

While a memory screening is not a substitute for a consultation with a physician, it can help to determine whether additional testing is warranted. With as many as 5.1 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, and many more with mild cognitive impairment and dementia, early detection and intervention can be critical to making informed decisions for greater health and quality of life.

  69. Circle of Women Luncheon
    Date: Thursday, November 29, 2012
    Time: 11:30 am – 1:00 pm
    Event Location: Fort Wayne Marriott
    CALL (260) 424-4908 EXT. 254
Join us for the 16th Annual YWCA Circle of Women Luncheon as we focus on the prevalence of teen and young adult dating violence. You’ll learn what signs to look for, how the YWCA can help, and hear from keynote speaker, Johanna Orozco:

Johanna is a Teen Educator for the Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center of Greater Cleveland. Jo has turned tragedy into triumph. After being in an abusive relationship for two years, she had the courage to leave her abuser—a decision that almost took her life. Shortly after leaving him, her former boyfriend sexually assaulted her and later shot her in the face with a sawed-off shotgun. Johanna shares her compelling story with schools, community organizations, parents, and concerned citizens, to educate them about dating violence. She focuses on self-respect, confidence and what signs to look for in an unhealthy relationship. Johanna has been featured in The Cleveland Plain Dealer and has appeared on 20/20, Oprah Winfrey, and on The View with Vice President Joe Biden. On October 2011, Johanna received an award and was recognized as a Champion of Change by President Barack Obama.

  70. Assertiveness vs. Aggressiveness
Event: Diversity Dialogue, “Assertiveness vs. Aggressiveness”
Where: IPFW, Walb Student Union rooms 222-226 – please note, this is a change for this month!
    When: Wednesday, October 24, 2012
    Time: 12:00 – 1:30 pm
It’s easy to advise someone experiencing domestic violence to leave the situation. But what about self-defense classes, pepper spray, or carrying weapons? How can we reconcile our perceptions of safety and security with reality? What about feelings of anger and frustration that domestic violence survivors must learn to handle?
This month’s Diversity Dialogue, in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, explores these issues related to finding balance between assertiveness and aggressiveness as it relates to domestic violence survival.
Join us for an interactive exercise on survivors of domestic violence and why they can be aggressive versus assertive, and learn the difference.
This and all other Diversity Dialogues are free and open to the public. Free parking will be available in the campus parking garage and there will be persons available to direct community members to the Dialogue.
To join us, RSVP on our YWCA Northeast Indiana Facebook page, or contact our Administrative Coordinator, Sue Hiatt, SHiatt@ywcaerew.org and (260) 424-4908 ext. 254.

Fort Wayne, Indiana. – June 27, 2012 –The Three Rivers Gaming Convention (3CON) on Saturday, July 7, 2012.

Gamers from Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and around the nation will be attending 3CON at the Grand Wayne Convention Center on July 7th. The event, now in its second year, will host trading card, miniatures, role playing, and board games.

The only thing resembling a video game that you will find is the Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator that uses networked computers to simulate the bridge of a Star Trek style starship. Players take the roles of the bridge officers and are tasked with the duties of Captain, Helm, Communication, Engineering, and Weapon Control.

Special events include: Magic the Gathering 2013 pre-release, Yu-gi-oh! Tournament, Malifaux & Battletech Miniatures Tournaments, and a Gamers Swap Meet where attendees can buy and sell games.

“3CON is a gathering of gaming enthusiasts that prefer to sit across a table and socially interact with other gamers, rolling dice and manipulating game pieces rather than sitting in front of a computer or television screen,” said Rob Stone, 3CON’s Director.

3CON will be donating the proceeds from the event to Riley Hospital for Children and is seeking the support of local businesses and media to spread the word.

This Diversity Dialogue is about prescription drug abuse. People who would never consider themselves capable of drug addiction, can find themselves chemically dependent on prescription painkillers, anti-anxiety drugs, or muscle relaxants. Doctors continue to prescribe these drugs long after their usefulness has passed, while addicts and their families either don’t notice, or rationalize the drug use. The consequences of long-term prescription drug abuse are severe, life-threatening, and capable of ruining families.

Guest speakers will be announced on our website.

I am going to be in the Miss Queen of Charities Pageant through the Salvation Army next month. Part of my scores and the competition are based on the amount of money I raise for the Salvation Army.

I am required to find businesses to sponsor me. Sponsorship packages start at $50 and go up from there. How these sponsorship packages work are your business gives a check and ad/business card to me. I will deliver it to the Salvation Army who will display your advertisment in the pageant’s program.

I am yet to find any sponsors and really want to be able to be a part of this pageant. Please remember what a great way this is to give back to the community and help those in need.

Let me know if there is any way you can help me with this! I would be happy to stop by your office to work out payment if you can help in any way.

hosts Benefit Concert for Henryville Disaster
Victims on March 15th from 6:00-8:30 PM.
We have a semi-truck to fill and need the Fort Wayne community
to help us do it. Concert admission is free to everyone in the
community. The students are hopeful to raise money during the
concert to purchase pallets of food and building supplies to fill the
Semi-Truck. The concert will be held outside on the lawn.
Fort Wayne, IN March 8, 2012: The students of Willowbrook School in Fort Wayne, a small
private elementary and middle school on Dupont Road, have created a plan to aid in the relief efforts
from the devastating tornados in Henryville, IN. They have partnered with the Henryville Community
Church to bring a semi-truck to them filled with the supplies they need. Henryville Community Church
is currently feeding 1500 residents of Henryville daily and has pledged to continue to do so as long as
needed. Henryville Community Church is also leading the rebuilding efforts of Henryville. The
students of Willowbrook want to fill the semi-truck with pallets of bulk foods and building materials by
3/19/12. This idea started during a social studies lesson on rebuilding communities.
The students at Willowbrook called a school meeting with all of the parents today and spoke
directly to the parents with a speech they prepared. (Link to the speech:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOi7acD9ol8&feature=email) This all started with a group of 2nd,
3rd, 4th and 5th graders with a passion in their hearts and a desire to help people in need. When asked
why they wanted to help they said, “Because it is the right thing to do and we can make a difference.”
Another student pulled a $10 bill out of his pocket and said that he wanted to donate his own money
to help. Within 3 minutes 7 other students offered their money and together they raised $400. They
thought if they could do this in their classroom what are the possibilities if they went out into our
    community.

    “GreenCare for Troops”
    To Support Local Military Families
